The Oakford Social Club
On my way home last night, having taken a slight detour to see if he was there, I spotted Rob Rebus outside Reading's new Indy bar The Oakford Social Club. Turned out he was giving out free drink vouchers! WOO!
Anyway, the place is really nice inside in a cool relaxed way. They have a nice selection of beers and the food looks great. I guess I could be spending an awful lot of time there. Really nice to have a cool place like that in Reading. Cheapest lagers are Amstel (and maybe Becks Vier) at 2.60. Food looked reasonably priced considering how good it looked.
It's a good thing I like it because we're planning to go there tonight after the "secret" gig at the BBBs, and the Fringe Festival Wrap party is there on Thursday so I'll be there 3 days in a row before we even get to the weekend!
Speaking of the Fringe wrap party, it's mainly a chance for us all to let our hair down and have a few drinks but if anyone wants to come along and give us some constructive criticism we'd love to see you!

Remember Coments?
As Rob pointed out in a comment to my previous below, we've been particularly crap at updating this recently.
AK has some excuse in that he's been away on holiday. I don't really have any excuse other than a generally high level of apathy. After infrequently updating this blog for over 2 years I do find that sometimes the things I might be going to say are a little bit repetitive.
"had a rehearsal with the new band... went quite well..." or "Pete and the Pirates are playing on Wednesday...".
I'd like to post more genuinely interesting stuff, but that might require me to actually either do something interesting worth talking about or think about some interesting issue and since the Fringe Festival my brain's been reduced to a kind of vegetated mush incapable of thinking about much more than work and food. Mmmmm. Food.
So... er... I had a rehearsal with the new band yesterday, it went pretty well. We've got a regular rehearsal slot on Monday evenings now which hopefully means we'll have a lot done. We've also (finally) agreed on the band name that we should have agreed on months ago. Joey Ultra! We've got 3 songs nearly finished, 2 more ideas that need working on.
Binz (of Club KK and Berkshire Live fame) is our singer, he's never been in a band before but he seems to be taking to it pretty well. He's got a pretty good natural feel for writing vocal lines and lyrics and he's getting better with practice. We probably won't be gigging before the new year, it'll take some time to finish off a set and then really get nice and tight and confident I think.
Oh and Pete and the Pirates are playing on Wednesday at the VIP launch night for Reading's newest (only) cool Indy pub/venue The Oakford Tavern. Also on Wednesday is the last ever gig by the legendary Three Litre as part of the Rebus and Friends gig at the BBBs. Also on the bill are Damien A Passmore, Ben Marwood, Rebus and My Luminaries which is an absolutely brilliant line-up.

Hello again
The dust from the Fringe Festival has settled, lots of lessons have been learnt and it's nearly time to start planning for next year! ARGH! I think I need a few months off for my brain to forget how difficult it all was.
New band has finally agreed a name, I think... which is good. Need to get on and write some more songs now, and see if we can remember the old ones. I'd really like to be doing some gigs early next year, and if we start rehearsing regularly I don't see why we can't do that.
This is a pretty rubbish update, I was just a bit embarassed that the last post was over a fortnight ago.
What else is going on, oh yeah, Pirates are doing an XFM session which is really cool. Things going really well for them at the moment. I think they are playing at Reading's cool new Indy bar the Oakford Social Club. It'll be a bit bizarre actually having a cool bar like that in Reading! Hopefully it'll be as good as it potentially could be. We might even talk to them about doing future Screwballs there... if we ever actually decide to do another one after last time.
