A swift half

Gareth from the Palestinians popped round to my flat last night to see if I wanted a quick drink. Well, as it turns out I did. He was just getting some lubrication down him before going to the One Dollar Peep Show, Sandcreek Massacre et al. gig at the After Dark. I couldn't be bothered going to that, not supposed to get really pissed after a flu jab. Er... I've sidetracked myself.

Anyway, so we were talking about local bands, who's really exciting etc. and he said he was looking forward to seeing Joey Ultra and that because of the strange mix of people in the band he was hoping it'd be something a bit different/exciting/good. Pressure! He had one good point though which is when a lot of bands form out of the ashes of other bands people have some expectations of what they'll be like, based on their previous bands. With Joey Ultra we've got Binz as a frontman who's never been in a band before, Ann who's never drummed in a band before. I think the gig on the 10th will not only be the band's first gig but their first ever gig! Some similarities with the Palestinians there, although Gareth and Austin had been in bands a long time ago, the other three never had.

If people like us half as much as they liked the Pals, I'll be happy. Weekend plans still pretty open. Dinner at a co-worker's house tonight, but out and about tomorrow.

This week...

I have mostly been visiting doctors. Well I had a blood test yesterday (it took a lot of searching and jabbing in both my arms but they eventually found that I do still have some blood) which made me feel pretty crap for the rest of the day and today I've got a flu jab. Awesome. This is also day 8 sans alcohol for me which must be some kind of all time record!

Joey Ultra rehearsal was on Tuesday this week, and in a different room to normal at Impact. This has totally thrown me! Rehearsal went alright. 3/5 songs are totally done 2 need a little work. For our debut gig on the 10th we're supposed to play "about 4 songs including a cover" so we'll have to choose some to not play, and learn a cover. Which is a bit controversial. The 2 not quite finished ones are probably the best, but they aren't quite finished. Also, one of the ones Binz, Ann and I like the best, Data Entry, Sam really doesn't like.

It's brilliant, we've already got too much material. On the other hand, 6 is pretty close to 4.

Anonymous, thanks for the mention of Club V saturday, it's definitely a possibility. Not sure if I can be arsed though. For any other readers who don't know. Club Velocity Christmas party (first of two!) is on Sat 16th @ Plug'n'Play, featuring Heartware Process, To the Barricades and Indigo Colony. See here for more details.

Weekend review

This weekend I did almost nothing, it was brilliant. After a lot of busy weekends in a row I basically spent the entire weekend staying in with my girlfriend doing pretty much nothing. Which is the first time we've been able to do that since about September.

Nothing really planned for this weekend yet. Suggestions?

Joey Ultra rehearsal is on Tuesday this week which is bizarre. Nothing on TV either so tonight mostly watching a video/dvd or playing computer games. Exciting!

I made it!

I returned from 3 days of Prague with liver, kidneys, sanity, passport, wallet and phone intact! That might not sound like a big achievement but trust me, it was.

This was my third trip to Prague, I wouldn't have necessarily chosen it as a destination to go for a third time but it is a good city for a stag do. Lots of bars, cheap nice beer and food etc. It is getting a bit seedy. This time we were approached a lot by guys trying to coax us into strip bars (which they seemed to suggest doubled as brothels). The first time we heard the "no more wanking in the toilet!" pitch we thought it was funny but when you've heard the same line from 10 guys it gets old fast. Some were even more explicit in their sales pitch, but I won't go into that.

I didn't attend any of said clubs, at the end of the night I was much more interested in getting a hot sausage (oh no, the unintentional innuendo!) from the vendors at the end of wenceslas square. For some reason every time I ordered one of their delicious spicy Czech sausages in a roll, I really can't call them hot-dogs they are so much better than that, they'd give me 2! Very confusing. But delicious and a bonus for the others with me.

I can say that walking up a massive hill to get to the castle followed by 10,000,000 steps to the top of a cathedral tower is not the best thing to do on a massive hangover. I've done it before but you do forget quite how painful it actually is!

Anyway, Prague gets slightly more touristy, commercial and less soulfull every time I go. Still a great city and well worth a visit but it's not somewhere I'd necessarily go for a 4th time.
