Malefice
Malefice are a metal band from Reading who are doing really well. I haven't seen them live for a few years, back then they were a promising young band but not totally polished. Obviously things have moved on a long way. I keep reading good things about them and I'd been meaning to check out their album. It arrived this morning and it's really, really good. I've been a bit disillusioned with metal recently, but whilst you can hear the influences this sounds quite fresh.

I've got a CD-R somewhere that Dale gave me of an album they recorded at No Machine. I will have to dig it out.

Young Knives
Sunday is a rubbish day for a gig. After a very civilised, but drunken, saturday night with some uni friends and a Sunday spent playing computer games I was very tired indeed but I had tickets to see the Young Knives and Pete and the Pirates, so I bravely ventured out into the cold night air.
It was a really good night. The first band Outside Royalty were a bit 'meh'. I've just seen whilst getting that link for them that their summary that shows up in Google is "The Outside Royalty: Think Bowie fronting the Arcade Fire." Wow. They do have some girls playing strings, but I don't think they sounded that much like Arcade Fire really. And I have no idea where the Bowie thing comes from. Their set got better as it went on, probably saved the best for when the venues are fuller, and the highlight was an entertaining cover of Eleanor Rigby.
Pirates were very good as always, not as good as the single launch the other week. They tend to feed off the crowd and it was a bit of a subdued Sunday night crowd (I certainly was...). Oh, they have a new website on the way, there's a placeholder page at the moment where you can download "Not a Friend" it's good.
The Young Knives were really very good. One of those bands from whom it turns out I knew a lot more songs than I thought. Very funny in between song banter. Big Pete pirate introduced me to House of Lords (the bass player) before the gig and he seemed quite quiet, but not on stage. Current single Terra Firma was a particular highlight.

Useless at updating...
A month already? Urgh. I don't know where the time's gone.
No updates 'cause there's very little been going on in the 'communications and entertainment' part of my life at the moment. I'm going to see Pete and the Pirates again on Sunday (Coment's really doesn't need more posts about them does it?) but other than that I've been doing very little music related.
Joey Ultra is plodding along nicely. We're getting tighter all the time and our more recent material I think is very good. We've discarded as many songs as we've kept and I think we've got mainly good stuff left. We're organising a gig for December or January at the BBBs. I'll let you know more about that when we know for sure.
The only gig I've been to in the last month was the Bleeptest Club at the Oakford which was great. It featured The Limes and Somebody's Mind, both of whom I've mentioned on here before. The next Bleeptest Club is next week and I recommend going. They have booked Barringtone who used to be in Clor, I really liked the Clor album so I'm sorry I'll miss it. I'll be going to see Wales vs Ireland at the Millenium stadium which is on the same day.
